L-Assunzjoni ta’ Marija

Horizons Productions have followed up the success registered by their DVD/Book combination, Vari, by releasing a new double DVD/Book set titled, L-Assunzjoni ta’ Marija. The complete package consists of two high resolution DVDs and an accompanying richly illustrated book that contains the complete script.
The feast of St Mary, celebrated in eight parishes in Malta and two in Gozo, not only occupies a central position in our annual festa calendar, but is inextricably linked with the arrival of the life-saving naval convoy of 15 August 1942. The convoy had set off under the code name of Operation Pedestal, but once the tanker Ohio limped into Grand Harbour with its precious cargo on board that enabled the island to survive and fight on, it became forever known as the Santa Marija Convoy.
L-Assunzjoni ta’ Marija examines in detail the priceless artistic treasures found in all the parish churches dedicated to St Mary. Highly relevant information is provided about the titular paintings that adorn the main altars. Works by famous artists such as Baskal Buhagiar, Francesco Zahra, Alfred Camilleri Cauchi and Envin Cremona, among others, are featured and described. The statue of St Mary in each of the parish churches is given pride of place, the camera revealing the artistic beauty of each statue which is accompanied by a detailed narration that also provides important historical information. The various altars and the priceless silverware with which the churches are enriched, including the many silver statutes of the Apostles, and the various decorations that embellish the churches during the feast days, are all given their due. The architectural importance of the churches themselves is explained as the camera reveals their many features whilst the narrative delves into their history and in so doing fully complements the riveting visuals.
Horizons have improved on the previously acclaimed Vari. L-Assunzjoni ta’ Marija is replete with eye-catching photography by Alan Mizzi, is enhanced by both Mario Coleiro’s excellent script, professionally read by Celaine Buhagiar, and by the specially commissioned background music composed by Mro Joe Brown. Production is by Kenneth Mizzi.
